We ‘make’ villages rather than building soulless housing estates.
Beauty and environmental benefit go together.
The pictures above show places that were built by ordinary working people in a pre-industrial or ‘low-carbon’ era. Their design and layout evolved around a natural and energy efficient lifestyle. We can learn from this.
We’ve travelled the world researching villages and towns that have been inhabited for a long time. We ask ourselves is the secret of their success? We look at how the layout and architecture of a place makes it attractive, welcoming and therefore successful. Then we work out how to design these characteristics into our new neighbourhoods.
People enjoy living in places like these and have looked after them for generations: this is a testament to their longevity. In the future, these kinds of communities will be the most resilient.
Their beauty and conviviality is the key to true sustainability.
