We ‘make’ villages rather than building soulless housing estates.
We start a new project by looking at the most attractive places in the surrounding area.
These are the models and inspiration for our new energy efficient designs. For instance, we often discover that it’s the spaces between the buildings, and not always the buildings themselves that make a place inviting.
Safe and purposeful routes also invite people to walk from one place to another, meeting another resident on the way. These kinds of physical aspects of a neighbourhood help people to get along with each other.
Communities seem to work better when there are pleasant ‘nooks and crannies’ in the design of the place where it feels comfortable to stop and talk to a neighbour. Noticing and understanding these sorts of details in local places inform our designs.
See Bob talk about this at The Dartington Future Homes Conference.
